European mounts, explained: from skull to wall

November 6, 2026 · In the Shop

A clean Euro mount looks simple. Getting it that clean without damaging bone takes time — here is what actually happens between drop-off and pick-up.

Clean, degrease, repeat. After the initial cleaning, skulls go through degreasing until the water stays clear. Rushing this step is why some skulls yellow or smell later.

Whitening is not bleaching. A proper whitening brightens bone without making it chalky or brittle. Then the skull is sealed, dried, and mounted on a hanger or display so the teeth and nasal bones stay intact.

Typical timing. At a working shop a Euro commonly takes about 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the animal and the season. Fall drop-offs during rifle season can run longer, so plan ahead.
